This brass coin salutes the 3rd Division of the U.S. Marines. Struck in a brass alloy, this coin has an attractive use of enamel, making a striking impression. The reverse contains the logo of the Marines set in a semitransparent red enamel that allows the look of radiance. 

Officially activated on September 16, 1942, the 3rd Division was initially built around the 9th Marine Regiment. In September, 1943, the Division participated in the Battle of Bougainville, and during the course of the battle suffered 400 Marines killed. The next operation for the Division was the Battle of Guam. During 21 days of fighting, the Division captured over 60 square miles of territory and killed over 5,000 enemy combatants. The Division remained on the island of Guam until they embarked as part of the landing force for the Battle of Iwo Jima.

This coin honors the Third’s valiant fighting spirit and legacy of bravery and sacrifice in protecting America’s freedom against crushing odds in any part of the world.

This coin is minted in a brass alloy and coated with an antique bronze finish. Emblazoned with the 3rd Marine Division insignia, with the Marine emblem on the reverse surrounded by translucent red enamel. Each coin comes packaged with a detailed header card that describes the mission and history of the Third.
