About US Military 6-Color Desert Camouflage

The six-color desert pattern, also known as “chocolate-chip camouflage,” saw extensive use by the U.S. Marine Corps. This distinctive pattern was also adopted by other branches of the U.S. Armed Forces, including the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard. It was prominently used from the early 1980s to the mid-1990s. The pattern gained significant recognition during the Persian Gulf War.

This distinctive camo pattern features light tan with swathes of pale green, coyote and dark brown bands, plus black and off-white spots.

Initially designed for potential conflicts in the Arab-Israeli region, it became standard issue for desert environments. However, its contrast was deemed too stark for effective desert camouflage, leading to its replacement by the three-color Desert Camouflage Uniform (DCU) in the early 1990s. Despite its phase-out, the cookie dough camo pattern remains popular worldwide.

The Marine Corps 8-Point Utility Cover

The 8-point utility cover is a key component of the US Marine Corps and Navy uniforms. This hat merges functionality with tradition. It resembles a baseball cap and is crafted for a sharp look.

Eight-pointed covers evolved from US Army field caps and railroad engineer caps.

Early Marine Corps versions were made of herringbone twill (HBT) until approximately 1959 and later cotton sateen. Modern versions are made from a durable nylon and cotton ripstop or a warmer twill fabric, catering to diverse environments.

This utility cover, featuring ventilation eyelets and embroidered with the Marine Corps EGA, continues to embody the enduring spirit and history of the USMC.
